The much awited 4G networks is launched in Oslo, Norway and Stockholm, Sweden.The speed of a 4G connection can be as much as 100 megabits a second, and 4G LTE has broad acceptance from the industry.

Earlier this year, Hermann Hauser, an industry expert on broadband, told TG Daily that: "There's no doubt that the next generation standard will be LTE."

He suggested that WiMAX, a standard for metropolitan broadband strongly backed by chip giant Intel, will cede victory to LTE. At the same conference, a senior executive from Texas Instruments said that chipsets for LTE are already shipping and in the next three years the technology, broadly accepted by the telcos, will be deployed in volume.

Some regions of the world, such as India, are still waiting for decent deployment of 3g network.

BSNL has widened its WiMax wireless internet services in Kerala. The WiMax service will be now available at 348 base stations in the urban areas of Kerala Circle which includes Trichur , Malappuram, Palaghat, Alleppey, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Kollam districts.

Earlier this service was available at Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram , Calicut , Kannur , Kasargod, and Wayanad Districts .

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, known as the WiMax for short, is an approved Broadband Wireless Access [BWA] technology in India. BSNL is the only operator who has the licensed spectrum to operate the same currently in the country.

This technology is a4G technology which offers speed upto 32 Mbps and is different from the current wireless technologies like EDGE, EVDO etc. The data transfer occurs via wireless modem which can be placed interior/exterior or via usb dongle.

Mobile Number Portability(MNP) will launch on 20th January 2011 in India

Competition set to intensify as interim telecom minister declares operators ready to roll out number portability.

India Thursday started mobile number portability services in a northern state to allow users to change their operators without changing their cellphone numbers, and said the service will be introduced nationwide on Jan. 20.

The launch of the new service will likely intensify competition in the world's fastest-growing telecommunications market by subscriber additions, and may prompt operators to further reduce call tariffs, which are already among the lowest in the world, to retain users.

Kapil Sibal, the interim telecom minister, said after launching the service in Haryana state that all operators are now ready to provide this service and their networks in the remaining 21 telecom service areas have started migration to the number portability system.

The launch of the service was deferred thrice as some telecom operators weren't ready with their networks to provide the service.

Telecom Secretary R. Chandrashekhar said number portability will increase competition among operators in terms of tariffs and service quality.

India adds more than 15 million wireless subscribers a month and is the second-largest market after China for wireless services with more than 670 million users. The fast pace of growth has led to an intense price war, with new companies launching aggressive offers to attract subscribers and existing players lowering tariffs to retain users. That has pushed tariffs as low as INR0.10 a minute for some plans.

Sanjay Kasturia, chief executive of Syniverse Technologies India Pvt. Ltd., the company which has the license to provide number portability services in 11 of India's 22 telecom service areas, said he expects 2%-3% of users to change operators in the next 12 months.

Separately, Secretary Chandrashekhar said that the telecom department hasn't yet issued notices to any operator seeking a fee toward availing excess bandwidth.

Late Wednesday, the Financial Times newspaper, citing two senior government officials, said India's Bharti Airtel Ltd.(532454.BY), state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and Vodafone Group PLC (VOD) unit Vodafone Essar Ltd. could be forced to pay more than $1 billion each to the government as fines for receiving excess bandwidth.

This came after an audit determined that the telecom ministry in 2008 allotted bandwidth for second-generation mobile licenses to the three operators beyond the contracted limit without charging any fees upfront.

The scandal over the license and bandwidth allotment led to the resignation of Andimuthu Raja as telecom minister earlier this month. The government later appointed Sibal as the interim telecom minister.

In May, the telecom regulator had suggested charging a one-time fee from companies which hold excess bandwidth for 2G services and that this fee should be linked to 3G spectrum. The move was opposed by most operators, including Bharti and Vodafone Essar.

Thursday, the regulator also said it will bring out rules on spam calls and text messages in the next few days.

BSNL will get Fund Rs.2395 crore for rural WiMax Deployment

BSNL will be given a grant of Rs 2,395 crore with a list of riders to enable the telco to complete the rollout of its wireless broadband services, an official in the telecom ministry aware of the development told ET.

Last month, BSNL had blared its disgust at operating as a social workhorse without compensation, and the state-owned telco had bluntly told the government that it would continue building wireless internet services across rural India only with a grant of Rs 2,395 crore more to support an unviable business.

The state-owned telecom company, which offers services in all parts of the country except Delhi and Mumbai, had written to the telecom department stating that it is against rolling out services on the rural WiMAX project on a no-profit/loss basis without adequate financial support.

The telecom department in a November 16 communication to BSNL had asked it to rework its estimates for its WiMax initiative and spread the costs associated with the project over a 20-year time frame, while also adding that the additional spectrum cost of Rs 1,662 crore must not be front loaded as this resource can be used over two decades.

The telco has also been asked to scale down its projections that 5% of its total revenues from this service would be incurred towards distribution and 2% towards marketing. It has also been asked to work out infrastructure sharing deals with other operators to lower costs.

The project is divided into three parts, and under phase-I about 1,000 towers for WiMAX are to be set up, followed by 6,863 units in the second phase.

So far, the Department of Information Technology , has agreed to provide subsidies to the tune of Rs 710 crore for the two phases — Rs 160 crore for setting up the first 1,000 towers and Rs 550 crore for the remaining. But BSNL has said that it can support a maximum of 1,798 towers with this level of funding.

This implies it can only build 798 towers when compared to the requirement of close to 7,000 units for completion of phase-II. BSNL’s move to stop the project will see only 17,000 Computer Service Centres (CSCs) get WiMAX-based internet connectivity across rural India against the government’s commitment to link over 62,000 CSCs through this project.

4G Africa selects Alvarion for Cameroon WiMAX rollout

Wireless broadband equipment supplier Alvarion has announced it has been chosen by Swiss telecoms firm 4G Africa to deploy a mobile WiMAX network in Cameroon. Under the contract, which is valued at USD2 million, the Israel-based vendor will deploy infrastructure in the cities of Douala and Yaounde using its end-to-end Mobile WiMAX 4Motion solution in the 2.5GHz frequency band. ‘4G Africa is focused on establishing WiMAX networks in emerging Sub-Saharan countries, such as Cameroon, with the overall aim to reduce the digital divide,’ commented Dov Bar-Gera, CEO of 4G Africa, adding: ‘Leveraging Alvarion’s technology and expertise allows us to provide a high-performance quality network, offering valuable broadband services to the residents in this market.’ Services are slated for launch in 2011 and are expected to provide connectivity to over 10,000 users within the first year of operation.

BSNL invites bids for 6,800 WiMax towers

Governmet-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has invited bids to set up 6,800 WiMax towersin southern zone. The tender for setting up the WiMax base transceiver stations (BTS) is estimated at Rs 1,400 crore.

A senior official from BSNL told Financial Chronicle that the company has received bids from some of the players and is evaluating them. “We are evaluating the bids both in terms of technical and financial compliance. We will announce the successful bidder by next week. For the 6,800 towers it is estimated that the value would be around Rs 1,400 crore,” he said. This implementation for the BTS has initially been rolled out for the South zone.

At present, 1,000 towers are in the implementation stage under the first tender. The public sector undertaking (PSU) has outlined Rs 300 crore for setting up 1,000 towers.

“Once the roll-out is complete, we will start marketing the product for our customers. BSNL is the first operator in the country to offer wireless high speed broadband. We have not yet set a deadline for the launch of the service. Each signal from every tower will be available within a radius of 15 kilometres and it will be able to accommodate 1,000 customers,” he added.

Being government run operators, both BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) were the first service providers allotted WiMax spectrum. The department of telecom (DoT) has allotted WiMax spectrum in 2.5 GHz frequency band. MTNL has already invited bids from global players to set up and run its WiMax operations in Mumbai and Delhi.

WiMax or worldwide interoperability for microwave access is a wireless digital communications system for high speed broadband services.

The WiMax Forum forecasts that India will have 19 million WiMax subscribers by 2012, or 20 per cent of the world’s WiMax user base.

The government plans to auction the WiMax spectrum in January 2010, after which private telecom companies would be able to commercially roll out high-speed wireless broadband services. Last month the empowered group of ministers (EGoM) fixed Rs 1,750 crore as the reserve price for WiMax spectrum.

5G Future of AFRICA

Anyone living in Africa and interested in the future of affordable access will have spent some time trying to make sense of the complex evolving web of technology, regulatory policy, cultural issues, literacy, affordability etc that make up the ecology of communication infrastructure. Fortunately the market has sorted out a big chunk of that out for us. The future is mobile. Even your mother knows that the future is mobile. And mobile phones are evolving at a pace that no one dreamt of.

But other wireless technologies are evolving at an equally rapid rate. In the little over 10 years of its existence, WiFi has gone from 1mb/s to over 300 mb/s in performance and while performance has gone up, price has gone down. Nowadays, you find WiFi in an astounding array of devices from mobile phones to laptops to music devices to printers and projectors. Access to WiFi networks has also exploded. Nowadays a corporate building, public institution, airport, or even a cafe without WiFi is becoming a bit of an anomaly. But WiFi is not a mobile technology.

So how do those important but seemingly divergent technologies fit into the evolving technological landscape on the continent? Especially in the context of concerns that 3G operators simply will not be able to cope with the exploding demand for broadband access. In the U.S. the data demands of iPhone users has at times overwhelmed AT&T’s network. AT&T has experienced a 5000 percent growth in data traffic in the last three years. They have noticeably struggled to upgrade fast enough to cope with the demand, although things appear to have improved recently.

Lately motile operators have begun to hedge their bets in North America and Europe with the introduction of technologies like Femtocells to off-load network traffic . Femtocells are consumer devices which establish a micro mobile base station in your home and use your broadband Internet connection to backhaul your mobile voice and data to the operator’s core network. This takes the load off the mobile network for the operators and, in theory, saves the consumer money. It is also a good solution for homes in areas with poor 3G coverage. Unfortunately, this technology is unlikely to spread very far in Africa because it is designed mostly for people with high-speed adsl or cable Internet connectivity.

WiFi, however, is another possibility. WiFi is nearly ubiquitous on the recent generations of smartphones. WiFi networks can offer complementary access for mobile users. Technically, this is already true. You can connect to a WiFi network with your smartphone in cafes and airports although authentication can be a pain and Skype over mobile IP is a pretty variable experience, from blocked to patchy to hey I remember it worked once somewhere.

So what would it take to have a seamless mobile / WiFi experience where you didn’t actually have to pay attention to what kind of wireless network you were on? Well, as William Gibson says, the future is already here, it’s just unevenly distributed. In the middle of 2009, Cherry Mobile, a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) in Belgium, launched a converged mobile phone service which didn’t care whether your phone was connected via WiFi or GSM. In fact, the phone would work without a SIM card as long as there was a WiFi network. (Wouldn’t that just drive the RICA folk mad). The downside is that this is a custom app that only runs on new generation Symbian phones. Still pretty amazing though.

Will networks like Cherry make a difference in Africa? Maybe but not as they currently exist I think as the solution is not generic enough. Happily, the IEEE have been hard at work developing standards for making devices work over heterogeneous networks. An excellent article by one of the smartest people thinking about the future of the Internet, Bill St. Arnaud, highlighted two emerging standards:

802.21 – The 802.21 working group is developing standards to enable handover and interoperability between heterogeneous network types including both 802 and non-802 networks. This means that an 802.21 compliant device would be able to detect all available networks that it supports e.g. GSM + WiFi and would make the transition from one kind of network to another seamless.
802.11u – 802.11u is an emerging standard for internetwork roaming and authentication. This would enable not previously authorised roaming on networks within a structured authentication and services framework.

If network and handset manufacturers start manufacturing devices compliant with these standards, things could get interesting. While the obvious impact of these standards could be to reduce bandwidth demand on mobile networks, a secondary but possibly more significant impact would be to increase competition in mobile markets. It would potentially allow for the development of bottom-up WiFi-based telephone infrastructure that could extend mobile networks or even provide alternatives.

Broadcom buys 4G chipmaker for $316m

Broadcom said on lastweek it will acquire Beceem Communications, which provides 4G chips that support both Long-Term Evolution and WiMax.

The $316m (£197m) deal comes as a bevy of chipmakers aim to set themselves up for 4G networks. Intel chief executive Paul Otellini said on Tuesday that the company is working to add 3G and ultimately Long-Term Evolution (LTE) to its Atom chips.

Beceem delivered the first chip to support both LTE and WiMax networks, and the technology can enable downloads of up to 200Mbps. In the US, Beceem's platform powers Clearwire's WiMax network. Broadcom's plan is to combine its 3G, wireless networking and other products with Beceem's 4G.

UK 4G spectrum auction will be held mid-2011

Auctioning spectrum in the 800MHz and 2.6GHz bands would allow mobile operators to roll out much faster mobile broadband services than the 3G services currently available, with speeds going up to 100Mbps or roughy double that of HSPA+, the most advanced version of 3G. The 4G spectrum auction was originally scheduled for 2008.

In an answer given last Thursday to a parliamentary question, under-secretary of state Ed Vaizey — who works across the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) — said the government hoped to make an announcement about the future of mobile broadband internet by the end of the summer recess. This was apparently a mistake.

A BIS spokesperson told ZDNet UK on Monday that Vaizey had meant to refer to the start of the summer recess — which begins on 29 July — rather than the end, adding that the announcement would be that of the laying down of a statutory instrument (SI) "setting out the decision on the future of spectrum modernisation". The actual auction will probably take place "around a year from now", the spokesperson said.According to industry sources, Vaizey is unlikely to lay down a new SI, but will rather pick up an existing SI that was laid down by the Labour government before the May general election. That piece of secondary legislation would make it possible for operators that hold 2G/GSM spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands to 'refarm' that spectrum for 3G services — currently only allowed in the 2.1GHz band.

The spectrum that will go up for auction is a 72MHz wide slice in the 800MHz band — currently used for analogue services, but due to be freed up in the digital TV switchover — and a 190MHz wide slice in 2.6GHz band. Services that could be run in these bands include the long-term evolution (LTE) of 3G and WiMax, although the former technology has gained much more operator backing in Europe than the latter.

Operators such as O2 and T-Mobile have argued that they cannot value the 800MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum for bidding until they know whether they can refarm their 2G spectrum for 3G services. Different operators hold differing amounts of 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum, making it trickier for Ofcom and the government to establish a fair system for spectrum refarming that will not overly benefit one operator over another.

Korea to get 5G network

3G-capable cellular networks are simply handy these days, which let us always stay connected to the Internet, especially handy while WiFi hotspots are hard to reach. When I’m traveling, I always depend on the 3G Internet connection, which I get a USB HSDPA modem hooked up to my laptop, to keep this blog frequently updated. Besides, 3G of course is handy to let you stream various medias from the Internet onto your cellphones in comfortable speeds.

The speed of 3G Internet connection still remains in the range of 3.6Mbps to 7.2Mbps (Some variations could go higher, such as 14.4Mbps or 28.8Mbps). Some more they’re deemed as burstable bandwidth, which some times you will still feel the slowness when it gets congested. So, I’ll always wish for higher G (generation) to come soon, which provides much higher speed of Internet connection.

We’ve learned that the next higher G will be the 4G. But it seems like the 4G takes a couple of years to come true, as it involves a major change of hardware across the countries as well as a bunch of new phones. 4G is definitely what we dream for, which will be a fully IP-based integrated system, that delivers the Internet speeds between 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps speeds both indoors and outdoors. But don’t expect the super high-speed 4G to come pretty soon, it’ll need at least 3-4 years, which is planned to release in European countries in 2012 – 2015.

But, now the Korean seem to be more aggressive than others. They’re taking a big leap, which they’ve planed for 5G – the 5th generation in year 2012. Korea and Japan are the two countries that have been known for long to be aggressive in various hi-def media streaming and online gaming. They definitely need much higher bandwidth to deliver what their people need. At this stage, it’s still too early, and what 5G is to promise. About the speed and the services are still unknown, but should be much higher than the 3G and 4G. Just hope that they could get it out as planned, and have the 5G technology spread to other countries too. So, we all could enjoy the super high-speed 5G network. By that time, WiFi and WiMax would most probably have diminished in this world!

Qubee Launched Wimax in Bangladesh

It was a historic moment indeed for Internet technology in Bangladesh. Just 3 hours ago, Augere Wireless Broadband Bangladesh Ltd started its Wimax sercie in Bangladesh by introducing Qubee Wimad service. At the same time, the company has also inaugurated Qubee ‘flagship store’ in Gulshan, Dhaka. I got the invitation to attend the program but I was some sick and could not go there. However, I sent my photographer Abdul Aziz Liton and he recorded the entire ceremony and also took the pictures and did some video. There was a press release in Bangla and I have translated it in English that you can find a little later in this entry. Qubee will launch its new WiMAX service, for both commercial and residential users, in Dhaka at the beginning of October. From there it plans to rapidly build-out its network and extend its services into the other major population areas -- and eventually across the country.

Qubee’s WiMAX (News - Alert)-based broadband service is already available in Pakistan and is set to launch in Bangladesh at the beginning of October.

The company has reportedly been working with consultants and local telecoms experts to identify the requirements for customer support. It reportedly selected Interactive Intelligence’s contact center platform because it is entirely software-based and is modular in architecture, so can be scaled to match requirements as Qubee grows in the region.

It also didn’t hurt that Interactive Intelligence already has some installations in the region and is therefore able to provide support.

"The existing users of Interactive Intelligence in Bangladesh showed me how well the system works, and we have had excellent continuing response from the whole company," said Anna Jordan, Qubee director of marketing, in a press release. "They have proved to be very reactive and very good at delivering to our tight timescales."

Qubee is also reportedly using Interactive Intelligence’s training services to train new agents on how to use, expand and support the system.

The new contact center will deliver customer service in two languages, Bangla and English.

"Markets like Bangladesh are currently limited by slow, unreliable and expensive internet connections," Jordan explained. "But there is a very hungry customer base. We need to make our customers feel supported and secure in using our services.”

Wateen launched WiMax in Pakistan

Good news for those in Pakistan hungry for another link to the 'net: Wateen Telecom has officially launched its WiMAX / HFC services for the consumer market. Reportedly, Motorola played a huge role in deploying the "first 802.16e commercial WiMAX network in Pakistan," and according to Wateen, it's the largest WiMAX network "ever installed."

In case you hadn't already guessed, Wateen Telecom is indeed a Abu Dhabi venture, and the service will initially be made available in 22 cities. For more details on exact coverage and rate plans, be sure and check out Wateen's website.

Wateen Telecoms launched its WiMax operations in Lahore. Last week we invited Wateen’s technical team to install its wiMax in our office at STC (Siddique Trade Center) Gulberg III Lahore. After spending few hours with the CPE device they informed us that “signal for WiMax are very week in the office premises, so we are unable to install WiMax”.

I think wateen is the one of the first and major player in WiMax operation in Pakistan and they have been testing the WiMax services in different areas of Pakistan since late 2006. We didn’t expect this situation from wateen’s installation engineers. STC is is situated in Gulberg III which is the most important place for IT companies. Most of the offices in STC are software houses. If they cannot provide wimax in Gulberg III, then there’s not point for launching the WiMax operations?

More important thing about wateen’s wimax are their prices. They are providing 128Kbps for just Rs.400 per month but their CPE (Wimax Device) is very very costly. Its about Rs. 23,500 for home and corporate clients, which is a huge amount for home users.

Every package for home users is shared between 16 home users and every corporate package is shared by 3 corporate users. First of all no one will spend 23K for their CPE, if someone do; he will get 8Kbps (from 128Kbps shared) download speed (supposing all 16 users are using bandwidth)

Although the two public sector telecom operators BSNL and MTNL already offer 3G services, they have so far clearly failed to generate interest among their as well as other mobile subscribers. The scenario is expected to change for good when private players enter the 3G arena.

In the 3G auction held this year in May, seven of the nine bidders won spectrum. Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Aircel each won in 13 of the 22 circles, while other operators such as Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular and Tata won licences for nine, eleven and nine circles, respectively. A fairly new entrant, Haryana-based S Tel, won the license for three circles while two bidders, Videocon Mobile Services and UAE-based Etisalat went empty handed.

Early launch of 3G services will give service providers an edge over their competitors amidst falling tariffs and the introduction of mobile number portability which might be a reality soon.

TTSL, with its announcement of launching 3G services this Diwali, has yet again taken the lead and will be the first private telecom operator to roll out 3G services on a commercial basis.

The company announced that it will launch next generation mobile services (3G) on the day of Diwali next month in all the nine circles that it has won spectrum in, and will provide the new service to subscribers of Tata Docomo, its GSM network.

Next in line will be Airtel, the largest telecom operator in the country, based on subscriber numbers. The operator had earlier said it would launch the services by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, two of the seven operators, Vodafone and Aircel, will commercially launch their 3G services in the first quarter of 2011.

In fact, Vodafone on Thursday demonstrated its 3G services for customers in India. Marten Pieters, managing director, Vodafone Essar, recently made the company's first 3G video call from Mumbai to Delhi.

Before Vodafone, Reliance Communications showed the world its 3G network at the company's annual general meeting with a private news channel being streamed live to a mobile phone.

Although Reliance has not divulged an exact date, the company has made it clear that it wants to be amongst the early launchers of the service. "We are not going to wait for other operators' launch and then position ourselves.... ours will be among the early launches and it will be very soon," the company's chief executive Akshay Kumar had told reporters earlier.

As far as Idea Cellular is concerned, the company refused to comment on the date of launch. In May, however, media reports suggested that it plans to launch its 3G service in the third quarter of the ongoing fiscal.

The youngest telecom operator to have bagged 3G licenses S Tel too has remained tight lipped about the launch of its service. However, the company has revealed that it plans to invest approximately Rs 360 crores in capital expenditure over the next five years to roll out 3G services in the three circles it has spectrum in, namely Bihar and Jharkhand, Orissa, and Himachal Pradesh.

BSNL 3G Tariff will change according to Market Competition

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) which is planning to expand its third generation (3G) services to 120 more cities across the country by December might change its 3G tariff.

Gopal Das, BSNL chairman and managing director, said to Telecom Yatra, "Our 3G tariff is will change depending upon the market dynamics and volume."

He added, " Initially we had come with a 3G tariff plan so that people start getting used to our 3G services and now when most of the private players will start offering the services we may have relook at it."

BSNL, which got the first movers advantage as it bagged 3G airwaves ahead of the private players has only, 1.8 million of its subscribers who use 3G services as of now.

BSNL charges its 3G customers 30 paise per minute for video calls. Apart from that, BSNL also offers data usage at a rate of 1 paisa per 10 Kilobytes (Kb).

The telco has also taken several steps such as improving 3G coverage and launching more value added services to enhance the 3G experience.

Most of the private players, except Tata Docomo, who had bagged 3G spectrum in the recently held auction plans to launch the service by the end of the year. Tata Docomo has already launched 3G in the country from Diwali.

NSN gears up for 4G mobile telephony using BWA spectrum-2010

After bagging deals from leading telecom operators to implement 3G services in India, equipment vendor Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has said it is ready to implement the next generation mobile technology here through the broadband wireless access spectrum.

NSN has tested LTE (TD-LTE), or the fourth generation (4G) mobile technology, using broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum in India, the company said in a statement.

Industry observers say that as TD-LTE moves closer to commercial availability, it is likely to spoil the case for rival WiMax technology, which also uses BWA spectrum.

During the test, NSN demonstrated high-definition video streaming and three-way video conferencing.

"This is an important milestone in building the TD-LTE ecosystem in India," said Urs Pennanen, NSN's head of India region.

"TD-LTE over the BWA spectrum is important for the country, as it will allow operators to offer voice and data to the masses. We are ready to collaborate with partners to accelerate our progress toward a comprehensive deployment of TD-LTE in India."

'Create whatever you want to do as you move around using the latest advancements in WiMAX' was the theme of the event as current developments in WiMax technologies offer mobile personal broadband users create whatever they want on a variety of devices from the laptop to cell phones.

could transform laptops, cell phones and other knowledge devices to wireless mode.

Given the fact, that Reliance has been foremost in the country in coming up with predatory prices in terms of calling rates, handset rates at a time when tariff wars were unheard of in the country. RIL will be deploying 15,000 base stations at a cost of $1.5 bn over the next three years. The auction for broadband licenses comes less than a month after a much larger auction for crucial 3G spectrum, which operators need to improve and roll out data intensive services to India's 600 mn cell phone users.The government is set to earn about Rs 39,000 crore from the auction of broadband wireless, which recently ended.

Aircel launches WiMax in Chennai-Tamilnadu

Aircel Business Solutions, a part of mobile-service provider Aircel, has announced the launch of wireless Internet services through Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) technology, which enables 'last mile' connectivity using 'near line of site' (NLOS) wireless equipment.

With this launch, ABS becomes the first company in India to launch WiMax and one among the five global operators to achieve this feat.

Launching the service, Ram Shinde, senior vice president, Aircel Business Solutions, said: “Initially, ABS aims to make Chennai 'wire-free' using WiMax technology enabling wireless Internet connectivity for SME, enterprise and residential use.”

He said that ABS was positive about the commercial viability and acceptance of WiMax across varied user profiles and geographies considering the substantial growth rate of Internet subscribers in recent time.

“As of now, ABS would be offering WiMax based on 802.16d standards and the forthcoming 802.16e standard will be even capable of mobile Internet,” he said adding that the company is geared to provide coverage to 90 per cent across commercial areas in Chennai.

Shinde informed that the company has invested close to $1 billion in setting-up the infrastructure for WiMax and would invest another $2 billion in current fiscal.

“After Chennai, we would be rolling-out our WiMax services to another 44 cities in three phases over the next six-months,” he added.

LTE gearing up to cash in on India opportunity

LTE ecosystem is projecting readiness lest operators choose rival WiMax. There is a sense of urgency in the LTE camp with Infotel reportedly looking to roll out WiMax.

The major argument in favour of WiMax, apparently, is that it is ready in terms of network equipment and end user devices, and operators seem convinced by this.

To counter this Ericsson has announced its readiness to roll out its LTE network as soon as operators decide their launch plan. P Balaji, Ericsson’s vice president for marketing and strategy in India, said to Telecom Yatra, "Ericsson is ready with the technology and equipment. We can implement as soon as operators decide to roll out the network.”

Qualcomm went to the extent of bidding for TD LTE spectrum in India, and is now in a hurry to implement it. It announced its local partner in the venture and has already applied for FIPB and an internet service provider’s licence.

It also announced plans to do trials by the first quarter of 2011 to prove LTEs mobility and compatibility. These trials are aimed at convincing operators of two things: One, LTE will provide full mobility, and two, that it will work with 2G and 3G devices.

Demonstrating compatibility with 3G devices is basically aimed at thwarting the WiMax camp’s claims that the LTE equipment is not ready. Qualcomm president, India and South Asia, Kanwalinder Singh, said, "There is no dearth of devices for LTE as it works with 3G and 3G+ devices which are already available in the Indian market and that too at reasonable prices.”

He added, "We are working with the industry to bring down the price points further."

The WiMax camp on the other hand is busy showcasing its strengths to the industry. These include lower rollout cost and device readiness. It also claims that full mobility is already available.

Although the Indian market is very important for both the camps, for WiMax it seems to be more important after the set backs it has received with Sprint in the USA and Yota in Russia.

RIL Infotel 4G services not before mid of 2011

Reliance Infotel Limited, which won pan India BWA spectrum in the recently concluded auctions, will launch services only by the middle of next year.

A senior official of the company told Telecom Yatra that, being a green field operator, the company will need that much time to put all the systems in place

He also said that Infotel is talking to all the tower companies to share infrastructure, and added that it will not be feasible for it to roll out towers on its own and that therefore, infrastructure sharing will be the way to go.

On the technology front, he said the company will adopt a technology that is emerging as a global standard, as migrating to the other technology is a very cost intensive preposition.

There are two fourth generation wireless broadband technologies – WiMax and TD-LTE. Of the two, WiMax is said to be in a greater state of readiness for rollout, while TD-LTE's advantage is that it is backward compliant.

Mukesh Ambani controlled Reliance Industries bought 95 per cent stake in Infotel soon after it won pan India 4G spectrum.

Being the only pan India spectrum owner, Infotel's decision regarding the technology is very crucial in deciding the fate of LTE and WiMax technologies in the country, and will have a big impact elsewhere as well.

WiMax to be commercially launched in four months in India

WiMax forum has announced that it has been able to convince all the service providers for WiMax trials. The first commercial launch has been scheduled to take place around Diwali. WiMax Forum earlier announced trials are been carried by all spectrum winners except one.

CS Rao, chairman, WiMax Forum, India, said, “We have touched base with all the operators and all the operators understand that WiMax is the only technology that is ready for being deployed, and that our competition is at least one year away from deployment stage. Even operator, which was quoted by media as supporting the rival technology (read Mukesh Ambani-owned Infotel broadband,) is going for a trial of WiMax and we are very optimistic of a win there”.

He said that WiMax answers all the questions from operators, as it is a mature technology, with a mature ecosystem which can deliver equipment right now, and has a clear development path.

There have been reports of Infotel, the only pan India winner of broadband wireless access spectrum is opting for TD LTE, however, after yesterday’s press conference of the Wimax Forum, it seems that the company has not yet made up its mind.

If Infotel opts for WiMax, it will be a big gain for the WiMax lobby, as Infotel is the only pan India player, other winners are expected to follow its footsteps or else risk being trapped in technological islands.

Sachin Pilot launches WiMax services in Mizoram

Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot, on Thursday launched EVDO technology based wireless broadband services in Mizoram and also announced the introduction of WiMax based broadband services in the state.

He said that more advanced wireless technologies will be provided in the landslide prone state to prevent disruption of communication.

The minister said that BSNL has provided mobile phones to 91,000 people in the state and another 45,000 will have access within a year. He added that the government will spend Rs 34 crore to improve communication services in the state.

All villages in the state are to be covered with wireless communication by June 2011 and broadband services by the end of 2011, Pilot further said.

While 3G auction in India takes it’s own sweet time, WiMAX is setting a strong foothold (a report suggests that WiMAX subscribers in India will outnumber 3G subscribers.

As per Infonetics report, India is the most ripe market for WiMAX with VoIP playing a key role in adoption. Few interesting insights from the report:

As per a report by ASSOCHAM, WiMAX broadband subscribers in India will outnumber 3G subscribers by 2014.

As per the report, there will be 20 million 3G-based broadband subscribers by 2014 as opposed to 60 million WiMax users.

The rationale behind these numbers is the availability of 20 MHz spectrum per operator and the expected lower price of WiMAX based devices (WiMAX data card is expected to be available for as little as $40, compared to $80 for 3G).

The report misses couple of points – for instance, lack of PC penetration that impacts the usage of BWA (Broadband Wireless Access).

ASSOCHAM, quite lately has been courting controversy over it’s reports and couple of industry leaders have slammed this report.

Is US in back seat for adopt WiMAX?

WiMax appears to be a hit around the world--except for the U.S., according to deployment data released by the WiMax Forum Monday.

WiMax, also known as 4G, now is offered on networks covering 620 million people in 147 countries, said the WiMax forum. By the end of 2010, 800 million people will be covered with 1 billion by the end of 2011. The 2011 time frame is notable because that's when Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks, a WiMax rival technology, will begin to ramp.

The data, however, indicates that WiMax is a global effort, but lags in North America. For instance, Clearwire is the main champion of WiMax in the U.S. and largely responsible for the deployments. Clearwire has some big backers like Intel, Google and others and partners like Comcast and Sprint, but can't carry the load by itself.

The debate over 4G technologies has been going on for years. In the US, and much of Europe, it would seem that Long Term Evolution (LTE) has the upper hand and will likely be popular in that part of the world. In the United States, Clearwire has a large WiMAX network covering 69 markets.

However, just this week, the company began testing LTE signals. The company will likely make a shift in the next few years from WiMAX to LTE because this is the technology that the other wireless carriers are likely to adopt. Another seemingly large blow to WiMAX was when Cisco recently reported that they will be exiting the WiMAX market they entered back in 2007 with the acquisition of Navini Networks.

So this signals the death of WiMAX, right? Wrong.

First, let's look at Cisco's bowing out of the WiMAX radio, antenna and base station market. While this may seem like a big deal, Cisco never really was a big player in this market that has been and still is dominated by Cellular tower manufacturers such as Motorola and Qualcom.

It is my belief that Cisco made a half-hearted attempt to enter the market for the purpose of helping to kick-start the 4G revolution. Cisco wanted to get their foot in the door to begin conversations with wireless service providers such as Clearwire so they could sell not only WiMAX gear, but also routers and switches.

A brand new core network was required for Clearwire's rollout, which is Cisco's bread and butter. As it turned out, Cisco was so successful in it's pursuit that the WiMAX bait-and-switch tactic was no longer needed.

Now let's look at why LTE will be a more popular option in more developed countries such as the United States. Strictly from a technology standpoint, both WiMAX and LTE offer similar performance statistics both now and for the foreseeable future.

The real selling point that makes LTE more attractive in developed countries is that LTE is a simple "rip and replace" of a few existing 3G network components. These components can be quickly and fairly seamlessly upgraded with LTE components.

BSNL's WiMAX roll out status

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has deployed 827 base stations under Rural Phase 1 project and 741 base stations in Urban project using WiMax while MTNL franchise model has failed to attract bidder's interest.

Under Rural Phase1 project BSNL has set up 827 base stations covering 1000 Rural Block HQ of the country. Approximately 10279 number of rural common service centers (CSCs) and 14591 village panchayats have coverage through Rural Project.

The information was provided by Sachin Pilot, the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.

He further added that 741 base stations have been deployed under the Urban project provide WiMax services in the urban areas of Kerala, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

While 348 base stations have been set up in Kerala, 335 base stations have been deployed in Punjab, 25 base stations in Andhra Pradesh and 33 base stations each in Maharashtra and Gujarat with franchises model of revenue sharing.

On the other hand, the other PSU, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), had invited bids for WiMax on revenue sharing model. The bid however, failed to generate interest with Prithvi Info Solutions, a Hyderabad based software firm, as the sole bidder.

The two state owned telecom firms were assigned one block of 20 MHz spectrum for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) in 2008, more than a year ahead of the private telcos.

Government auctioned 2 blocks of spectrum each of 20 MHz, for BWA to private companies in 2010. The auction has been completed and total revenue of Rs. 38543.31 crores has been generated through the auction of BWA spectrum and allotment of BWA spectrum to BSNL and MTNL.

Infotel broadband services won licenses in all the 22 circles, Aircel got seven circle, Tikona won five, Qualcomm and Bharti four each, and Augere emerged winner in one circle.

State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) all set to launch WiMAX the 4th Generation Wireless Broadband Service in the National Capital Region (NCR) with speed up to 7 Mbps to provide High Speed Super Fast wireless Internet connectivity in this area.

Union minister of state for communications and technology Sachin Pilot said that BSNL WiMax service will be launched by the end of this month at Dhankor and would be extended to the other parts of the NCR such as Bisrakh, Dadri, Jewar and Jahangirpuri in next financial year. Through this BSNL will usher in a new era of growth in Wireless Broadband. This technology offers broadband speed of 7 mbps at a distance of 15 kms.

BSNL launches WIMAX in Nagaland

The standard was developed to fill the space between 3G and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) standards; providing more data rate, mobility and coverage required delivering internet access to mobile clients via handheld devices.

The standard uses 100 MHz of licensed Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum, from 2.30 to 2.40 GHz, allocated by the South Korean Ministry of Information and Communication for mobile wireless internet usage, and adjacent to the international unlicensed 2.4 GHz ISM band. The IEEE 802.16-2004 and Draft 3 of the 802.16e standard were the basis for the development of WiBro, and the key PHY parameters are compatible between the two standards.

As for other wireless alternatives, like 3G, 3.5G, and 4G, the number is similar — WiMAX will cost about 16 percent of the cost of other cellular-based broadband, largely because it will require fewer towers. Those are the closest comparisons. When compared to cable and FTTH deployments, WiMAX costs should come in under one percent of either alternative.

These deployment economics alone should be cause for concern for landline operators that could see WiMAX providers enter the market with considerably lower CAPEX. It’s been a dream run for voice in India. India positions itself as number two nation in new world order. However the broadband leadership is dominated by Southkorea, Japan, Hongkong, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands, Singapore, Luxemburg, Denmark and Norway.

India ranked 62 in global broadband leadership scale, with average download and upload speeds recorded way below than the needs of current internet applications. The current internet visual applications require consistent 2Mbps downlink and 1 Mbps uplink data rates.

In our analysis we found that the average broadband speed in country is below 600 kbps in downlink and 300 kbps in uplink. The leading broadband nations were found above 8 Mbps in downlink and 2.5 Mbps in uplink and the access latencies were found below 80 milliseconds

Broadband penetration by number of households was estimated between 5 to 6 %. The availability of broadband networks has especially improved after beginning of Ev-Do services in country. The mobile broadband networks were deployed in top 100 cities by four wireless operators i.e. Reliance, TATA, BSNL and MTS.

The data collected from Ev-Do Networks in five metro cities imply average delivery of 300 kbps in downlink and 150 kbps in uplink. On average, Hyderabad performed best with 250-350 kbps average download speed and 100-125 kbps average upload speed and New Delhi was at the bottom with 240 kbps for download and 130 kbps for upload.

The number of broadband connections in country is less than 10 Million, which is fewer than 2 % of the total number of voice subscriptions in India. Total internet connection in India is about 15 Million as per statistics released by regulatory of India, representing less than 1% of total population.

The principal challenges in delivering broadband to masses are excessively high right way charges, fragmented cable operators, non cooperation in last mile copper unbundling and low data ARPU. The total amount of spectrum allocated by regulators for broadband application in country was too little to support proliferation of broadband services.

The new 3G/BWA spectrum and the advent WiMAX and LTE based 4G technologies will play crucial role in shaping broadband industry in India. Our analysis in this paper exemplifies the competence of 4G technologies like WiMAX and LTE to deliver broadband in most competitive manner. 4G technologies has the potential to bridge the digital data gap in India and will play very similar role what 2G technologies played in Voice.

A need for strong national broadband policy is felt to foster social and economic development in India and accomplish broadband leadership. Analysis presented in the paper estimates allocation of at least 270 MHz of new spectrum in next five years and over 450 MHz of spectrum in next 10 years for broadband applications would be inevitably required to take India to top broadband nations.

BSNL’s WiMAX network is slated to be the most extensive in the world, comprising 7000 base stations and covering several states across India.

Gemtek’s WIXS-181 outdoor CP delivers high speed internet access and operates at 2.5 GHz and gives users best-in-class coverage and throughput in a sleek form factor. Of course, no conversation about emerging technology is complete without the question, “What can I do with it?” At the very basic level, WiMAX will offer the capacity for service providers to deploy next generation broadband service more cost effectively than today, to a wider customer base, while adding a mobility aspect to those services.

More specifically, however, WiMAX will provide a means for service providers to offer Quadruple Play services (voice, video, data, mobile), or Triple Play plus Mobile. Certainly, there are alternatives, as the market has already witnesses with providers partnering with and reselling other providers’ offerings. But, those arrangements afford neither the profit margins from nor optimal control over those services. Service providers that are able to, on their own, deliver all these services, will have a distinct advantage.

So, with WiMAX, providers have the bandwidth and speed to provide VoIP, IPTV (including video on demand), and Internet access. The key, then, lies in its wireless access means, which allows is to provide each of these services on a fixed and mobile basis — turning it into Quad Play.

Indian Regulator TRAI Announces the Spectrum Allocation Policy Recommendations

After a brief consultation process which began in previous years , the TRAI has given its recommendations to the government on the spectrum allocation or auction Policies in the 3G bands as well as 2.3GHz, 2.5-2.69Ghz and 3.3-3.4 Ghz bands.

If any of the potential WiMAX operators or wireless ISP were expecting sunny days ahead with potential licensing of hundreds of megahertz of spectrum in bands which form the prime ones for mobile WiMAX, they were sorely disappointed by the recommendations. This is not funny for a country where the broadband penetration has stagnated at 10 million after over a decade since when internet was available. With the incumbent BSNL and MTNL having control of over 80% of the fixed lines, the new operators were banking on wireless or WiMAX technologies to take them ahead.

The regulator has relied on the WRC-07 recommendations on adopting the OFDMA-TDD as one of the approved air interfaces under the IMT2000 to bring in the mobile operators amongst the select set of operators which can bid for such spectrum.

The following are the key features of the recommended policy:

(i) Vacation of the 2.5-2.69 GHz spectrum Slot: As a first step in the process of raking in the proceeds of the potential auction of this band the existing licensees have been recommended to vacate this band and be relocated in the 3.3-3.4 GHz band.
(ii) A Hold on allocation of the 3.4-3.6 GHz band till the potential interference with lower extended C-Band satellite communications can be decided upon.
(iii) Auction of the 2.1 GHz, 2.3 Ghz and 2.5-2.69 Ghz bands. The later two bands to be also opened for UASL operators and ISPs while the 2.1 Ghz is exclusively for 3G operators.
(iv) No eligibility for broadcasters or cable operators for any of the bands of spectrum
A very low reserve price for spectrum: While opening up the new bands for UASL and cellular mobile operators the reserve pricing of spectrum has been kept well below the global levels for unspecified reasons.
The reserve price of 15 MHz of spectrum for Category A, B and C Circles has been kept at $15 Million,$7.5 Million and $2.5 Million respectively for category A, B and C circles. Hence for a countrywide footprint with all circles, the reserve price does not exceed $ 100 million, which is well below even that used for GSM.

In TRAI’s own interpretation of the WRC recommendations, because the WiMAX has been approved as one of the permitted interfaces under the IMT-2000, the WIMAX operators should be evicted from this band and this band should be opened to mobile and UASL operators.
The 2.5-2.69 Ghz spectrum was earlier the MMDS band which was used to distribute the TV signals via a wireless medium. Today the WiMAX permits the same facility for Wireless TV to be delivered to mobile handsets and local communities.
The recent JV of Clearwire, Sprint Nextel, Comcast and Time Warner in the USA has explicitly set aside 5 MHz of spectrum for delivery of Cable TV wirelessly to users.

Indian Policies now recognize Mobile WiMAX as an alternative technology to 3G

The newly announced changes to the 3G auction Policy and the WiMAX spectrum auctions now contains elements of recognition that WiMAX is not simply a way to extend wireless but an entirely viable and complete technology in itself. The recognition of the importance of WiMAX to be able to operate as an independent network providing voice, video and data services came in the form of doubling of the minimum reserve price for WiMAX auctions from Rs. 50.5 Billion ( $1.2Billion) to Rs 100.10 Billion ( $2.4 Billion).

Considering the runaway growth of mobile subscribers at over 10 million a month and the consequent shortage of spectrum has led to a wake up call to the government. The 3G, which at one stage was being intended to be given away to existing players at throwaway prices will now be auctioned to all players including foreign bidders, thus breaking a cozy club which had kept the prices artificially high for roaming and any form of value added services.

The government and the regulator have also recognized the value of the WiMAX spectrum in the prime mobile WiMAX bands of 2.1, 2.3 and 2.5 GHz bands which is slated for auction in the near future. The new revised price is a reflection of the recognition of these bands for providing a range of mobile WiMAX based services including VoIP, broadband internet and video. It may be recalled that earlier in Aug 2008, the regulator had already recommended opening up of VoIP services, previously limited to only fixed line or mobile service licenses to ISPs as well. WiMAX, then had become a natural candidate for the ISPs to potentially provide all services including Mobile Voice using the WiMAX technologies. The new spectrum policy also opens up the 700 MHz band for WiMAX auctions, denying the plea of industry players to keep this band reserved for Terrestrial Digital TV. However, once auctioned the new WiMAX players are more than likely to use this band for WiMAX TV services. With capabilities of indoor reception and long cell sizes the band is ideally suited for WiMAX TV.

WiMAX bands of 2.3 and 2.5 GHz are the ones where certified WiMAX devices are already available or will be available by end of the year making these the prime bands for inexpensive deployment of mobile WiMAX networks with ready availability of user devices.

The importance of Mobile WiMAX spectrum and in particular the 2.5 GHz band has increased after the WRC’07 had adopted OFDMA-TDD as one of the approved air interfaces under the IMT2000 implying that the band can be used under the 3GPP architectures. However the initial deployments are likely to use WiMAX networks along with the IP Multimedia system (IMS) as defined under the 3GPP.

While the reserve prices are still a reasonable $2.4 Billion for the whole country, it is expected that the auction process will lead to a price discovery which is at least double of these prices, probably more. This also impacts the state run companies BSNL and MTNL as they need to pay for spectrum at the same rates as the highest bids received. This is likely to impact their cash flows in the absence of sale of equity unlike the private players. It also has the potential to bring new aggressive players who have started their life as ISPs to enter the lucrative mobile services market.

Try BSNL it will always be more than 2 mbps even if they say upto 2 mbps

I am sure its just the choice of those who have no other option.

Wimax will never be there when you urgently need internet or atleast you can’t be sure it is there and how long it will be there.

The customer care is just sitting their to fool around people and listen to our abuses.

The only thing they do well and in time is disconnect the service asap after due date, because most of the customers don’t pay, coz theservice is not OK.

If you have an option like AIRTEL or BSNL in your area never ever go with reliance.

With the Department of Telecommunications gearing up for simultaneous release of 3G and WiMax spectrum, analysts expect the two emerging wireless technologies to battle it out for supremacy.
WiMax or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access is a telecom technology that enables wireless transmission of data. The technology is available as IEEE 802.16D (fixed) and IEEE 802.16E (mobile). It offers downloads of up to 70 Mbps as compared to the 15 Mbps that 3G provides. Mobile WiMax offers download speeds of around 20 Mbps.

In India, companies like Tata Communications Internet Services, Intel, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications are the proponents of WiMax. Most of the companies have had beta-runs of the technology.

According to a top official with a service provider, telecom service providers are in various stages of WiMax implementation. Some companies have commercially launched fixed WiMax services in certain cities.

Another reason for the industry pinning its hopes on WiMax is its ability to increase the broadband penetration.

Braham Singh, CEO of wireless broadband service provider, YouSnapper, says: “WiMax makes huge sense for companies as it enables them to provide cheaper mobile internet and broadband services, in turn, increasing the internet penetration.

However, this will adversely impact services like GPRS and e-mail on mobile as users might move over to WiMax-enabled devices for data, even though they might stick with 3G or 2G spectrum for voice.”

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has set a target of 20 million broadband connections by 2010 from the current 4.3 million. The industry expects WiMax to bridge the gap. Manesh Patel, partner (Risk Advisory Services), Ernst & Young said service providers would mainly use the technology for gaining traction with the customers, as providing the last mile over the conventional digital subscriber lines would be time-consuming and costly.

The technology would be mainly adopted by internet service providers, while some mobile companies were also expected to bid for the spectrum, he added.
Operators will have to use 3G spectrum to revive voice services that are being choked by a dearth of 2G spectrum, Patel added. The WiMax customer premise equipment (CPE) is priced at Rs 5,000-10,000, while the CPEs for 3G would be cost Rs 10,000 and above.

Qualcomm combines 3G and 4G wireless technology

Qualcomm has started providing wireless chipsets that combine 3G and 4G wireless technology.

The cunning plan is to help carriers transition to the next generation of wireless technology. While many carriers around the world plan to upgrade their networks to 4G using LTE, 4G signals will not be available everywhere and punters will need to roam on 3G networks.

Huawei Technologies, LG Electronics Novatel Wireless, Sierra Wireless, and ZTE have been named as testing the new chips, which will be in the shops in the second half of 2010.

Each chip allows wireless phones and other portable devices to switch between a 4G wireless network using LTE and HSPA Plus, a 3G wireless technology.

Meanwhile Qualcomm is providing a new set of mobile-device chips to manufacturers for testing that will add more multimedia features to new smartphones.

This chipset family supports high-definition video recording and playback, enhanced graphics, and an overall chip design that is optimised for the web.

Qualcomm expects phone makers to have devices that use the MSM7x30 family of chipsets commercially available by the end of 2010.

The chipsets will allow phones to operate on the most advanced 3G wireless networks, such as those running the latest generation of HSPA and EV-DO .

They have been adapted for use on Android, Brew, Symbian, and Windows Mobile operating systems. The company says that applications the chips could enable include a 12-megapixel camera, 720p video recording, and 3D gaming.

Meanwhile Qualcomm has been telling the world plus dog that its 1Ghz Snapdragon ARM chip will ship in an upcoming Lenovo smartbook.

AT&T will be flogging the ARM powered Lenovo smartbook and there is some talk that ARM is also into the small form-factor laptop market and could give Intel's Atom some serious competition.

The ARM Cortex-A8 core has 1GHz of processing power and is already being seen in a few smartphones.

Wimax firms team up on 4G

A NUMBER OF VENDORS have clubbed together to boost interoperability with Wimax 2, which is based on IEEE standard 802.16m.

Together they hope to make it easier for firms offering Wimax services to keep up demand for feature-rich multimedia applications on high speed networks. Wimax 2, they said, meets the ITU requirements for 4G services and allows for peak rates of more than 300 Mbps.

Wimax vendors including Alvarion, Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, Intel, Motorola, Samsung, Sequans, XRONet and ZTE today launched the Wimax 2 Collaboration Initiative (WCI), and as a group will work with the Wimax forum to accelerate adoption and implementation of Wimax 2 kit.

"Intel is pleased to see strong ecosystem support emerging to accelerate Wimax 2 capabilities," said Pouya Taaghol, chief technology officer at Intel's Mobile Wireless Group. "Intel has been a leader in driving the IEEE 802.16m standard and will work closely with this group and the Wimax Forum to ensure Wimax 2 meets the needs of operators facing explosive demand for mobile data and services."

The WCI will work to increase collaboration and performance benchmarking, testing of 4G applications, interoperability testing, and services to help developers prepare for Wimax forum certification.

MTNL inviting bids for WiMAX rollout

MTNL has announced that it will soon invite bids from private players for deployment of WiMAX services in Delhi and Mumbai.

MTNL plans to allow one successful bidder each in its licensed area of Delhi and Mumbai for deployment and operation of their WiMax system conforming to IEEE 802.16e standard, on an exclusive, revenue sharing basis.

State owned MTNL and BSNL were allotted spectrum long ago for BWA roll-out but failed to utilise the opportunity of being the first-mover. MTNL now faces competition from Qualcomm and Infotel, both of whom have expressed interest in using TD-LTE for roll-out.

India gets closer to WiMAX with Samsung

The company has already deployed Wimax infrastructure for 25 operators in 15 countries such as Japan, US and Russia.

"The company is in discussion with the operators for deploying the network infrastructure as we have global experience and are looking at leveraging that to the Indian market," Samsung Corporate Vice President (Networks Business) I D Hwang told PTI.

WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a wireless technology that enables faster data-transfer over a wider area than Wi-Fi.
Talking about the opportunities in India, Samsung Corporate Vice President (Networks Business - Marketing) Hung Song said, "Last year, about USD 720 million was contributed to our revenues by Wimax and it is expected to double this year without India in the picture. If India gets added, business will grow manifold."

According to analysts, after the Wimax services rollout, India would have about 5 lakh subscribers. This is expected to grow to 50 million by 2015, driven by the huge demand for data services like e-mail and social networking.

A recent study by McKinsey projected that a country's GDP improves by 0.6 per cent for every 10 per cent increase in penetration of broadband.

"Studies globally have proved that higher broadband penetration has helped the economies move up. Broadband will create new segments of industry and jobs in the country and a majority of the new subscribers would come through wireless technologies," Hwang said.

The auction of spectrum for mobile broadband is slated later this month and the government has received applications from 11 companies, including Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Aircel.

The government has kept the reserve price at Rs 1,750 crore (Rs 17.5 billion) for pan-India spectrum. Two blocks of 2.3 MHz spectrum in each circle will be put up for the auction.

Asked if the fourth generation of mobile technology Wimax would be successful in India, Hwang said, "A lot would depend on the timely deployment and the pricing and marketing strategy adopted by the players."

"The prices should be at par with the current broadband offers, otherwise the acceptance might be low for Wimax," he added.

Intel and AT&T were among the major foreign companies that attended a pre-bidding conference held by the Indian government, ahead of the 3G and WiMAX auctions planned to start in January. And the Department of Telecom indicated that it would look to open up several new bands, including 700 MHz for WiMAX and broadband wireless, soon after the end of the 3G sale.

One of the constant sources of speculation, throughout the tortuous process of getting the Indian spectrum auctions on track, has been whether foreign operators would look to gain a foothold - as some, such as Vodafone, DoCoMo and Telenor already have - or even whether vendors would want to participate in joint ventures or franchise agreements. In franchises, suppliers and carriers share risk and reward and they can give a vendor a chance to push its preferred technology.

At the conference, according to Indian newspaper Business Standard, a clearer idea could be gained of which firms are likely to bid for the new licenses. The established cellcos were prominent, notably Vodafone Essar, Bharti Airtel and Reliance, as well as some of the new entrant carriers which gained 2G spectrum last year, such as Uninor, STel and Datacom. Most of the foreign telcos that have been linked with Indian auctions, such as SKT and Telstra, did not show up, however. According to Economic Times, France Telecom and Cable & Wireless have confirmed that they will not take part in the sales.

The pre-bid conference was organised by the Department of Telecom to address concerns and queries of any interested players, but did not entirely fulfil its mission - there is still no decision on the important issue of whether the auction will be conducted for all four slots in each telecoms ‘circle’ or region, or just in those slots where spectrum is already available (some has not yet been vacated by incumbents such as the Departments of Space and Defense, a critical risk factor for the progress of 3G and WiMAX in India). The DoT said it would announce its finalized policy on December 8, the day it will also invite formal applications. “If the defense forces are able to vacate the spectrum by then, we would go ahead with the auction of all the four slots. Otherwise, only available spectrum would be auctioned,” said DoT joint secretary JS Deepak.

After the 3G and WiMAX auctions, further spectrum bands are expected to come up for sale “quickly”, said the DoT, though judging by the 3G experience this could mean several years of rulemaking and debate. The next bands are likely to be 800MHz to add more spectrum for CDMA players (but, unlike in GSM/W-CDMA and WiMAX, state-owned BSNL and MTNL will not have early access); 2.1 GHz and 2.3 GHz for WiMAX, once the latter has been vacated by space agencies; and then 700 MHz for WiMAX and other broadband wireless technologies.

Once the spectrum is actually freed up, India is expected to be the world’s largest market for WiMAX vendors, and all the majors are already conducting trials with different operators there, while BSNL and MTNL have deployed some networks and are working on their franchise relationships with suppliers like Telsima/Harris Stratex and SOMA. The big WiMAX vendors - Motorola, Alvarion, Samsung and Huawei - will all be looking for rich pickings from 2010 onwards, and the technology is perhaps particularly important to Samsung and Alvarion, which have little or no presence in 3G and LTE.

There is no logical need for vendors to choose between WiMAX and LTE, just as many sold both GSM and CDMA systems. But despite the two-pronged strategy of Motorola, Huawei and others, there is an increasing tendency for suppliers to major on one 4G platform or the other, the choice partly driven by the kind of operators they aim to sell to. Samsung, while not writing off its chances in LTE, clearly sees WiMAX as its best market, and as it makes steady progress across the world, its chief wireless marketing executive said it could be a bigger revenue source for the Korean firm than CDMA had been.

India, Canada Team up on Cognitive Radio System

Telecom agencies in India and Canada are working together on a cognitive radio-based broadband wireless technology: The networks would operate in the 5 GHz spectrum (or possibly the licensed MMDS bands) and transmit as far as 1 kilometer to 2 kilometers. The base station would use as many as 48 antenna beams. The system would use cognitive radio technology to identify interference and poor links and then change its own signal transmission to improve the weak links. Ultimately the agencies hope to develop this as a low-costs system that can be used in underdeveloped regions or areas with aging telecom infrastructure.

It’s interesting to see that an Indian government body is involved in such research which appears to be primarily targeted at unlicensed bands, given that India only very recently de-licensed the 2.4 GHz band for Wi-Fi. The 5.1 GHz band is still only available for unlicensed use indoors.

There was a time when a few startup companies were trying to sell broadband wireless systems that used a handful of narrow antennas that could adapt to the environment to deliver the best signal. None of them used as many as 48 beams and they wouldn’t have been as sophisticated as cognitive radio. The only name I remember is BeamReach Networks, though I’m not totally convinced they’re still in business—the most recent press release listed is from early 2004. There were others too but I can’t recall their names.

Dishnet Wireless plans to spend US$57 million to rollout national Wi-Fi hotspot network in India via WiMax: The firm wants to jumpstart service ahead of rivals which are committed to wireline operations. Dishnet will use WiMax (or pre-WiMax, more likely until certification) to handle backhaul among a potential 6,000 Wi-Fi hotspots. By next March, they will link up 38 cities, starting with Bangalore. The owner of Dishnet Wireless sold a wireline DSL business (Dishnet DSL) to a former government-owned Internet provider. He also has an interest in the Barista coffee chain which will offer Dishnet Wireless service.
Om Malik has more detail from another article on the subject, too: eight cities will have service with 60 days, and it will cost about US$7 per month for basic service. Speeds will range from 128 Kbps to 1 Mbps. The Hindu newspaper notes that a test installation with five WiMax (misnomer) nodes served 150 people during a trial period. Om also points out that Alcatel will be developing WiMax in an Indian facility that one article estimates will employ 1,000 people.

India Broadband Wireless & WiMAX Market Analysis & Forecasts In 2008, Indian telecom continued to grow unmindful of any global economic meltdown or financial crisis. The mobile sector, in fact, broke all its previous records and added a robust 114 million cellular subscribers between January and December 2008. Leading into the New Year the streak continued, driven by new forces such as Reliance and Tata as the duo crossed over from CDMA to GSM, thus adding additional streams of new subscribers. Cellular subscriber additions are likely to push ARPUs further down in one of the lowest ARPU markets in the world, where up to 10 service providers compete for subscribers in some circles, thus raising concerns if the Indian mobile bandwagon may price itself out of sustainability at some point.

The broadband-hungry nation of India might just be waking up to realities. For starters, 2007 could well become the Preparatory Year of Wireless Broadband. Although the former Minister of Telecommunications in India proclaimed 2007 as the Year of Broadband for India, 2008 will instead become the Year of Wireless Broadband for India. Despite the unmet requirement to free bandwidth from various stakeholders, the key engines for broadband growth V the operators V are not willing to wait. Genuine Indian innovation is at work as vendors, operators, and system integrators are coming together like never before to work with whatever is available to trigger a bandwidth revolution.

In stark contrast, the Indian broadband sector continued to be filled with alternating moods of despair and hope as the government announced and postponed spectrum auctions with remarkable deftness. While the Year of Broadband campaigns remained on the agenda, service providers ended the year with more confusion than a clear BWA/WiMAX/3G strategy regarding where their businesses were headed. The top issue on every service providers' to-do list was: shore up more voice subscribers on 2G today - everything else can wait And so it did.

* The Indian BWA/WiMAX subscriber count added in the last year is well above 250,000.
* About 10,000 BWA/WiMAX base station sectors were deployed in 2008 alone.

* BSNL, the incumbent with a clear lead time (likely one year) on pre-allocated pan-Indian 2.5GHz is likely to be the big driver of WiMAX.
* Operators such as Reliance and Tata have demonstrated what can be done by using slim 3.3GHz bands, and established the case for fixed WiMAX in India.
* Operators such as Bharti Airtel have taken demand-driven approach where they have extended coverage based on enterprise need/availability of fiber/DSL and feasibility of BWA/WiMAX.
* We estimate that WiMAX subscribers will reach 13.5 million by the end of 2013.
* By 2013, the non-WiMAX BWA subscriber count will be down to sub-million.

WiMAX has generated a lot of interest in India. Due to limited 3G spectrum and low broadband penetration, India is expected to be a key growth market for the technology. Many industry players believe that the allocation of broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum to private sector operators, expected in 2Q10, will open up attractive opportunities for the technology in the country. However, our analysis suggests that WiMAX will only serve a niche market rather than dominating the field.

Leading Indian private operators, as well as incumbents, are working together in narrow 12 MHz channels of 3.3-3.4 GHz to deploy WiMAX services where possible. Notable among these are Reliance, the master operator who currently operates the nations largest CDMA network of over 29 million subscribers (as of July 2007) and has already started commercial WiMAX services in Bangalore, and Aircel, the Maxis Communication Bernhard (Malaysia) owned ISP that has been providing WiMAX-based backhaul services and leased bandwidth for corporations for over a year.

major trend is evident in that in September, two large carriers have brought out RFP/RFIs for Mobile WiMAX. BSNL will require upwards of 100,000 CPEs (with all options taken over two phases, this count can go up to 200,000) and 1000 base stations across the country. This is apart from a separate BWA/WiMAX requirement for commercial urban broadband that is in the works. VSNL, a Tata company, has also released an RFI for a large 802.16e -2005 based system for over 500,000 CPEs in a phased manner. (Note: An RFI does not mean a firm commitment to place purchase orders.)

Bharti Airtel is looking to spread BWA/WiMAX to 300 towns targeting 50,000 SME customers in 2007 using a combination of 3.3 -3.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequencies. BSNL, which launched the mother of all telco tenders for 60 million GSM line s in 2006, is in the early stages of drafting the RFP for what could become the largest ever BWA/WiMAX purchase requirement from a public -sector operator. The requirement is for 1000 base stations and 100,000 CPEs for a single project. Judging by some of the plans of Reliance, we believe that the companys extended plans include a massive requirement for 1 million CPEs over the next 12 months. Parts of the plan are already frozen, and vendor evaluations are undergoing completion. Of course, the realizatio n of the entire plan may be subject to political and technology issues such as rapid resolution of spectrum issues. However, we believe that in a worst case scenario, these projects will still move forward with at least 15% real deployment in the next 8 mo nths.

Market Forecasts

In 2006, the BWA equipment market opportunity in India was a mere US$25 million, up from US$6 million in 2005, and was dominated by small deployments for backhaul applications to enterprises with outdoor equipment.

However, Maravedis and Tonse believe that with the upcomi ng spectrum opening, the certification of new equipment, and lower -cost CPEs, the annual 3.3 and 3.5 GHz equipment opportunity will increase from US$4 million in 2005 to a peak of US$280 million in 2014. Maravedis and Tonse estimate that the Internet subs criber population will grow from the current 10 million to above 48 million by 2011. The Internet user population in India will have exceeded 200 million. This will be made possible by lower -cost PCs and notebooks, CPEs below US$40, and cheaper broadband service.

Maravedis projects an accumulated 21 million BWA subscribers by 2014, counting both residential and business segments. WiMAX subscribers should represent the majority of this figure. Approximately 66% of the WiMAX subscribers will be mobile 802.1 6-2005, predominately residential, while fixed WiMAX will continue to be driven by large corporations and, to a lesser extent, by SME.

One of the impediments identified in our India BWA/WiMAX Report 2006 was that the WiMAX CPE pricing may become a strong barrier in early penetration of WiMAX services. Leading -edge Indian vendors, such as Telsima, breaking the price barrier by over 50% as early as Q2 2007, has broadened the possibilities. Reliance, unsurprisingly, has brought WiMAX closer to reality by adopting a market-friendly tariff plan that allows a subscriber to sign up at a minimal cost of about Rs 700 per month ($17) in Bangalore, where the service has first been launched. Reliance has always been a mass-market leader, and it is not surprising that the company is leading the way in taking broadband to the masses at the best prices possible.

Recommendations
The Indian market for BWA/WiMAX will continue to be one of the most sought after markets for global equipment vendors. The nation promises to offer huge, consistently high growth for the next several years, judging by its extremely low broadband penetration rates (under 3 million for a population of 1.1 billion).

The government has initiated significant progress in resolving a chaotic spectrum scenario with too many interested parties (GSM lobby, CDMA interests, ISPs, incumbents, military, and other users) and a growing list of new applicants struggling to gain entry into the potentially luc rative telecom service business. However, much more needs to be done, and fast, if a semblance of a fair settlement is to be achieved. The 3G policy is already off by a year, and delays are spawning gaps in an extremely under-penetrated broadband market.

Several government agencies such as WPC, TRAI, and DoT are in disagreement on vital issues such as spectrum administration and management. WPC needs to move to a modern, automated, open operation and adopt a more consultative approach involving industry ex perts and ecosystem vendors to develop market -friendly policies. The entire spectrum-allocation and administration mechanism has to become holistic, more transparent, open, accessable, and market-friendly.

The governments approach to ISPs, cellular opera tors, and potential new license applicants needs to be fair. The ISP community appears to be reeling under a counterproductive license regime that requires special permits to provide most services.

There is an urgent need from the Indian equipment vendor market for policy makers (DoT and the Ministry) to introduce methods to encourage small technology start -ups to survive and grow in the domestic telecom markets. Eventually such initiatives could allow telecom companies from India to become global.

India can become one of the largest BWA/WiMAX markets. To take advantage of the opportunity, the authorities have to introduce a plan to bring small tech start -ups into the local market instead of them having to compete against large global vendors. This would foster a rich native-vendor ecosystem in this space. If done appropriately,this could enable technology exports from India to exceed even those of the software industry.

Tata Communications unveils an ambitious plan to become a global leader in wireless broadband by launching the world's largest commercial network.
India is about to become the frontier for high-speed, mobile Internet connections. On Mar. 4, India's Tata Communications, an emerging broadband player, announced the countrywide rollout of a commercial WiMax network, the largest anywhere in the world of the high-speed, wireless broadband technology.

Already 10 Indian cities and 5,000 retail and business customers use the product, and by next year Tata will offer service in 115 cities nationwide. The folks at Tata can hardly contain their excitement. "WiMax is not experimental, it's oven-hot," says Tata's Prateek Pashine, in charge of the company's broadband and retail business.

Of course WiMax is not new. Most everyone in the industry has been talking about it for years. Intel Chairman Craig Barrett has been propagating its virtues in pilot projects across the world, including India and Africa.

Tata Communications has been working on setting this up for a couple of years, and successfully completed field trials last December. It has used the technology from Telsima, a Sunnyvale (Calif.) maker of WiMax base-stations and the leading WiMax tech provider in the world. For now, the technology will be restricted to fixed wireless, but Tata plans to make it mobile by midyear. The company has invested about US$100 million in the project, which will increase to US$500 million over the next four years as it begins to near its goal of having 50 million subscribers in India.

Global tech analysts are will be watching carefully. Though WiMax is prevalent in Korea, the Korean service is a slightly different version, says Bertrand Bidaud, a communications analyst with Gartner in Singapore. It's a Korea-specific pre-WiMax technology called WiBRO.

But the Indian market is where the conditions for a WiMax deployment are the best, he says, because of limited fixed lines. That means Tata has fewer hurdles to overcome. And as WiMax scales up fast, it will give service providers greater flexibility and costs will drop equally rapidly

"If it doesn't succeed in India, it will be difficult [for it to succeed] anywhere else, and Bharti, Tata has been virtually asleep, with a limited subscriber base for its limited product," says Alok Sharma, chief executive of Telsima. "In fact, even with as many as seven broadband providers in the market, the total Indian subscriber base is just 3.2 million and there is no clear market leader. But with the WiMax rollout Tata can gain a leadership position and add a few thousand subscribers a day."

Tata is, of course, going for the heavy-billing corporate customer--a target audience that is beginning to make big investments in technology.

But also important is the ordinary Indian retail customer who can watch movies via WiMax and enjoy Tata's other unique offerings. For instance, users can take in an early morning worship service at the famous Balaji temple in South India. The temple permitted Tata to install cameras so that Hindu devotees from around the world could watch the proceedings in the temple around the clock. To get connected initially, users will simply have to go to a store, buy a router, install it, and then they become instantly connected. It will be as easy as buying apples, Tata executives promise.

Again Intel continued its commitment to develop WiMAX technology by premiered a prototype demonstrating Group Scheduling, a technology to increase the capacity of VoIP in 802.16m, next-generation WiMAX standard.

Vijay Kesavan,Senior Network Software Engineer of Intel, showed that a WiMAX cell site could accommodate 208 callers using the technology, compared to just 152 without it. In effect, it cuts the bandwidth usage of the VoIP calls by 40 percent. That’s a big deal because wireless carriers face big problems as revenue from voice calls plummets and costs of delivering data are rising.

The Group Scheduling’s target are:

Scheduling calls by groups reduces frame overhead and increases capacity for VoIP calls
Easier to make calls during peak periods
Technology adopted in IEEE 802.16m, the next-generation WiMAX standard

Reliance wimax has already been launched in Bangalore and Pune with plans for a Mumbai launch any time soon.

In India the wired form of delivering internet connection has not seen a lot of success mainly due to poor infrastructure unlike China where things are better planned for technology to come before hand.

BSNL News: December-2010 will see complete rural WiMAX roll-out

After numerous failed deadlines, BSNL has said that it will complete the roll out of WiMAX in rural areas by the year end.

Chennai-based Gemini Communications, Chinese equipment maker ZTE and the US-based Harris Stratex (renamed Aviat) are the three companies which now need to get a security clearance from the the Department of Telecom.

The Rs 1,000-crore project has hit a roadblaock with BSNL’s internal vigilance officer putting a stay on giving the project to one of the four shortlisted bidders. The Hyderabad-based VMC Ltd., which had emerged the fourth lowest bidder for the project, has been put under scanner for alleged evasion of duties by its parent company.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has also issued a show-cause notice to Prithvi Information Solution, the parent company of VMC, for the alleged non-payment of duties.

Tata Communications (TCL) has signed up 50,000 subscribers for its fixed WiMAX service. TCL, earlier known as VSNL, had received WiMax spectrum in the 3.3 GHz band under its Internet Service Provider (ISP) licence with the Indian government. Other Indian network operators- Bharti Airtel, Aircel, Sify and Reliance Communications – also own spectrum in this band.

Tata Communications Internet Services (TCISL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of TCL, is investing substantially for its WiMAX rollout to ensure that it gets a headstart in the acquisition of subscribers. The company, with a WiMAX capex outlay of $500 million for three years ending FY12, has put in place around 1,400 base stations across 140 cities. This makes it the largest WiMax network in the world, according to TCISL COO Prateek Pashine. TCISL has procured its WiMax equipment from Telsima Corp, a company recently acquired by Harris Stratex Networks. TCISL is obtaining customer premise equipment (CPE) from Taiwan-based networking and communications equipment firm Universal Scientific Industrial (USI).

BSNL launching WiMAX service in Orissa

BSNL Heads to state of Orissa for WiMAX services
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), State owned telecom giant, will launch its WiMAX services in Orissa this year. The WiMAX service, which provides broadband wireless internet connection in rural areas, has already been launched in Rajasthan on a pilot basis.

In Orissa, the sources said, as many as 645 WiMAX BTS sites has been identified. In the first phase, WiMAX BTS will be set up at 107 locations while other 538 locations will be covered in the second phases. These include 14 stations in Berhampur telecom district, covering Ganjam and Gajapati districts, said the general manager of the telecom district, BK Nayak. The equipment had already been installed by the Indian Telephone Industry (ITI), Bangalore, in the sites proposed to be covered in the first phase. The testing will conducted soon before full launch of the service, he stated. The main purpose of the WiMAX service is to take the broadband internet service to the rural areas, where laying of cable to provide internet connection is either not possible or too expensive.

WiMAX in a Fast Track Deployment
BSNL is planning to have a base of at least 250,000 WiMax customers by the year end. Currently BSNL has approximately 3,000 WiMax customers and we intend to have a customer base of at least 250,000 by December 2010." BSNL has recently launched WiMax services in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, with 25 base stations in each of these states. It has also rolled-out the service with 210 base stations spread across North and East India. Its present roll-out has covered approximately 4000 common rural service centres. A base station is a wireless communications station installed at a fixed location and used to communicate with WiMAX or any other wireless system.Apart from that, we intend to launch urban WiMax on a revenue share basis in other states. Also, 1,000 base stations will be commissioned in rural areas in the coming month. For rolling-out its WiMax network, BSNL is currently working with HCL; Chinese telco Huawei; Gemini Communications, a technology and network provider headquartered in Chennai; Pointred, a Bangalore-based wireless design and product company; ICOMM, a Hyderabad-based company with interests that include telecom and Harris Stratex, a network provider with global presence and headquarters in the USA and in Singapore.

Beceem and ICOMM Tele Enable BSNL's 4G-WiMAX

Qualcomm and Infotel will provide WiMAX Service with BSNL in KERALA Circle

California based chipset maker Qualcomm Inc. and Delhi based Infotel Broadband have won the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) licence for Kerala in the auctions that ended yesterday. The winning price for Kerala was Rs.258.67 crores. In another development, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries has acquired 95% stake in Infotel.

Wireless Broadband Acess or WiMAX, which is a 4G Technology provides high-speed wireless internet and data network access over a wide area. The service will allow companies to offer high-speed Internet access as well as IP Telephony and IP TV services.

Companies can deploy WiMAX to provide mobile broadband or at-home broadband connectivity across whole cities. Additionally, given the relatively low cost to deploy a WiMAX network (in comparison to GSM, DSL or Fiber-Optic), it is now possible to provide broadband in places where it may have not been economically viable.

Reliance Industries Limited Entering into Broadband Market of India

Infotel Broadband Services Ltd won the auction for India’s Wireless Broadband Access (BWA), Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) made a surprising move by acquiring 95% share in the company owned by the Nahata family. This will pit the Ambani brothers against each other in the telecom sector, which is permissible after the annulment of the non-compete agreement less than a month back.

Infotel Broadband is the successful bidder for all 22 circles at Rs 12,848 crore.
In the BWA auction, Aircel successfully bid for eight circles for Rs 3,438 crore. Bharti Airtel and Qualcomm Inc managed to corner four circles each. Eleven companies participated in the BWA auction for two bandwidth slots in the 22 circles. The BWA spectrum will make it possible to use hi-speed technologies like Wimax that is faster and more traversable than WiFi.

The latest move by Mukesh Ambani of RIL will place him in direct competition in the telecom sector with his estranged brother Anil Ambani of Reliance Communications, the country’s second largest mobile service provider. However, RCom had earlier pulled out of the BWA auction after it succeeded in the 3G auction of last month.
Wireless broadband internet services market in the country is expected to grow 100-fold in the next five years.

WiMAX spectrum auction ends

The 16 day auction for the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum is completed. The Indian government received more than Rs 38,000 crores during the BWA spectrum auctions.

Wednesday saw the conclusion of 110 rounds of the auction of airwaves for BWA services. This is a simultaneous online auction for two slots in each of the country's 22 service areas.The auction, which began last week, saw the pan-India BWA licence price going up over 600 percent from the Rs.1,750 crore base price fixed by the government.

BWA spectrum is essential for rolling out Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) services enabling hand-held devices and laptops to access the Internet.

The spectrum will allow companies to offer high-speed Internet access as well as Internet telephony and television services. It can also be used for voice and high-speed data services.

The total receipts to the government from the combined sale of BWA and 3G spectrum crossed Rs 1.06 lakh crores. This is almost three times when compared to the projections of Rs 35,000 crore that Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee made during his budget speech this February. The Department of Telecom has not shared the details regarding the BWA spectrum auction winners yet, the same will be shared shortly.

Eleven companies - Bharti Airtel, Reliance WiMax, Idea Cellular, Aircel, Augere Mauritius Ltd, Infotel Broadband Services, Qualcomm, Spice Internet Service Provider, Tata Communications Internet Services, Tikona Digital Networks and Vodafone Essar - are participating in the BWA auction.

Similar to what happened during the 3G auctions, the circles of national capital Delhi and the business capital Mumbai got the highest bids which were Rs 2,221 crore and Rs 2,272 crore respectively.

Two all-India slots of 20 MHz spectrum were auctioned during the BWA spectrum auction. Government players MTNL and BSNL were provided with the BWA spectrum before the private players but they will have to pay the amount equal to the winning bid amount in each areas of service.

The successful bidders in this auction can use the assigned frequency for commercial purposes immediately after they get the spectrum.Broadband Wireless Access spectrum can be used for high speed Internet and data services along with services like Voice, Internet Telephony and internet based Television services

With WiMAX subscriber base expected to reach 19 million by 2012 and WiMAX equipment market value projected to top US$600 million eventually following the auction of 2.3GHz and 2.5GHz licenses, Indian WiMAX market presents enormous business opportunities. India is slated to become the largest WiMAX market in the Asia-Pacific by 2013. A recent study sees India’s WiMAX subscriber base hitting 14 million by Year 2013 and grow annually at nearly 130% which means that in the next four years about 20 per cent of the global WiMAX users will be in India, making it a $13-billion market.

3. Emerging markets are regarded as the primary market for the WiMAX industry, specifically India, whose market is expected to grow significantly. Currently, the number of people using broadband in India is relatively low. There are only 4.5 million users out of a population of 120 million. Therefore, it is certainly a great opportunity for WiMAX operators to increase their coverage area. It is predicted that there will be 27 million WiMAX users in India before 2012, which would account for 20% of the worldwide WiMAX market. These days, Indian operators, have already deployed a 802.16d fixed WiMAX network between 3.3GHz-3.4GHz. Some of them have already finished deployment in many cities. According to the data from the Indian government, the economic growth rate continues to rise 9% each year and mobile consumers continue to increase by roughly 8 million users each month. After the issuance of licenses for WiMAX network deployment, it is expected to bring large-scale business opportunities for purchasing WiMAX equipment and terminal products.

4. India probably will see the world’s lowest end -to-end cost for WiMAX service and will drive costs down further than any other market. Integrated operators will erect WiMAX towers along with CDMA towers and derive further cost advantages. Third-party radio-tower companies have emerged within the last year in India who offer managed tower services for cellular operators. An extension of this would be to provide nationwide WiMAX tower services in managed -service mode. Bringing together thousands of towers is bound to create additional cost benefits to the WiMAX operator.

5. Currently, cellular operators are deriving a 15 -18% cost advantage from shared tower services. The Internet user population in India will have exceeded 200 million. This will be made possible by lower -cost PCs and notebooks, CPEs below US$40, and cheaper broadband service. It is predicted to accumulate 21 million BWA subscribers by 2014, counting both residential and business segments. WiMAX subscribers should represent the majority of this figure.

6. Approximately 66% of the WiMAX subscribers will be mobile 802.16-2005, predominately residential, while fixed WiMAX will continue to be driven by large corporations and, to a lesser extent, by SME customers

Auctions shows the stiff competition of 3G and WiMAX in India

A few years back, telecom operators like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices and Idea battled over cellphone techologies with a David -- code division multiple access (CDMA) -- being pitted against GSM -- a Goliath. GSM has emerged a clear winner.

A similar battle has now ensued with two rival technologies -- 3G Vs WiMAX -- battling for mindshare. The government is expected to net nearly Rs 50,000 from the 3G and broadband wireless access (BWA) auctions. However, even as the 3G auction is underway, the successful foray of WiMAX (a BWA technology) is not only being threatened by the broader acceptance of 3G (a Goliath in many respects) but also by another BWA technology called Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex or TD-LTE.

It may be argued that 3G technology is more suited to voice while Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access or WiMAX is better known for its data speeds. The non-voice revenue mix of Indian wireless operators is about 10 per cent as against 25 per cent for mature markets due to scarcity of spectrum. So ideally, 3G and WiMAX should be complementary -- one technology for voice, and the other for broadband data services.

However, 2G (and 2.5G) telecom operators in India, according to some analysts, are likely to leapfrog to TD-LTE rather than bid for WiMAX spectrum in the 2.3 GHz band.

TD-LTE is all all internet protocol (IP) network. The world's largest mobile operator by subscribers, China Mobile plans to use TD-LTE for its next generation network. Russian operator Svyazinvest, too, will adopt TD-LTE, and Qualcomm is bidding for TD-LTE spectrum in India.

The strategy would be good as the BWA spectrum is not so keenly contested as the 3G spectrum and provides much wider bandwidths of 2x10 MHz against 2x5 MHz in 3G. Working off one slot in 3G will be like doing a tightrope walk particularly in crowded markets which are the only places where these will get to be used. It is also common knowledge that with users shifting away from CDMA 2000 networks, the bandwidth has been already deployed as EV-DO which is a 3G technology. Hence nothing revolutionary will happen just with someone winning a 3G auction- something which cannot be done today.

On the other hand, the BWA spectrum is much more promising in terms of delivering applications with high bandwidth requirements and that is its key advantage. Using it for LTE or 3G is a non brainer in the present scenario. But looks like that the wait for WiMAX may turn out to be a mirage of the hot Indian summers when the services are expected to be launched.

Never far from a big opportunity to spread affordable internet access far and wide, Intel and Google are once again rumored to be about to embark on spectrum ventures, to win influence in the vast Indian market.Both are reported to be looking to partner with operators to bid for WiMAX spectrum, with a view to creating a well financed network that could expand quickly and support new approaches to mobile services, such as multiple MVNOs, open access, and free ad-supported offerings for poorer communities.

Department of Telecom plans to auction two blocks of 2.3 GHz spectrum in January. About 28 companies - including Intel Technology India, Google, Alcatel-Lucent India, Motorola, Huawei, HCL Infosystems and TCIL - have bought tender documents.

The search giant Google may gain short term profile by working closely with carriers, but its bigger vision rests on a fully open mobile web, where its services and revenue streams hold pole position. The search giant has consistently invested in initiatives that should increase availability of cheap, ubiquitous internet access, supporting Wi-Fi metrozones, Clearwire’s WiMAX build-out and emerging technology start-ups like femtocell specialist Ubiquisys.WiMAX is expected to be highly disruptive in India, attracting new carriers and revenue models, and supporting expansion of broadband access in a desperately underserved nation. With very limited fixed access, mobile platforms are likely to lead web uptake and Google aims to be in the forefront of this wave in one of the world’s biggest growth markets for its services.

BSNL and Intel Start WiMAX Acceleration Program

In support of the Indian Government's Bharat Nirman Rural Development Agenda, BSNL, HCL and Intel Corporation started a series of wide reaching initiatives to improve economic and educational opportunities in India by expanding access to wireless broadband Internet and affordable computers.

Intel and BSNL will jointly started wireless broadband Internet in what is intended to ultimately become a nationwide mobile WiMAX network. BSNL also will work with Intel and HCL to make available in India's rural regions WiMAX-capable nettop computers designed by the two companies and made in India by HCL using the Intel® Atom™ processor.

The mobile WiMAX network will meet IEEE 802.16e protocol and operate within the 2.5GHz band frequency. The three companies are working on developing WiMAX capable nettop PCs powered by the Intel Atom processor. These units will be manufactured in India by HCL.

Intel will also extend support to the manufacture of other WiMAX compatible gadgets like netbooks, smartphones and laptops for BSNL’s network. The nettops will initially retail at BSNL and HCL outlets in India before being sold through Intel distributors across the nation. Kerala and Punjab will be the first two states to avail of these new offerings.

BSNL Launched 4G WiMAX in ASSAM

State owned Telecom Player BSNL launched 4th Generation WiMAX service in the state of ASSAM.MP Sachin Pilot launched WiMax, BSNL’s high-speed wireless data services, at Chaygaon in Kamrup district to provide high-speed connectivity in the rural areas. High-speed Internet services will be available in an area of 15km at a broadband speed of 7 Mbps.

The BSNL will set up 850 mobile towers includind BST in the Northeast to deliver high quality telephone and also to provide communication facilities for border areas. Meanwhile metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai will also get a facelift.

The high speed wireless broadband connectivity will offer video conferencing, enabling tele-medicine and tele-education, besides providing other services like payment of utility bills, issue of birth certificates, land records, vehicle registration and many more....

The Vision of rural WiMax is deepening and the efforts rolled out in Assam will turn out it as a best investment hub for telecom sector. Rural areas can avail this service with a starting tariff of Rs 140 per month. BSNL has already planned to spend approximately Rs 1,200 crore for rural WiMAX.

WiMax services covers more than 200 base stations in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh.And also 450 BST work in progress for URBAN WiMAX in KERALA based on 4G. BSNL WiMAX Customer Premises Equipments [CPE]

There are 3 types of Customer Premises Equipment, viz USB dongle for mobility, indoor type CPE and Outdoor CPE for fixed wireless broadband connectivity. Customers can avail any type of CPE depending on the requirement. All the CPEs can be taken anywhere in the coverage area even though the USB dongle is the most convenient for mobility. The indoor CPE and outdoor CPEs are better for areas with poorer signal strength, the outdoor CPE being the best as it has an antenna which can be placed in the outdoor and connected to the CPE with a 10m cable.

There are laptops available in the market from various vendors with inbuilt WiMax CPE. In such cases, the services alone can be taken from BSNL.

BSNL Punjab Circle Launched 4G WiMAX Broadband
Indian telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) launches WiMAX the 4th Generation Wireless Broadband Service in Punjab telecom circle with speed up to 7 Mbps(37mbps comming soon)

The CGM, Punjab telecom BSNL, Wimax services for urban areas launched by Mr.Pradeep Paliwal, . It is significant that Punjab BSNL has already providing WiMax services in some limited pockets of rural areas.To empowered all 20 Districts headquarter, urban areas/towns of Punjab with High Speed Super Fast Internet connectivity, Speaking on the launch of WiMAX services Mr.Pradeep Paliwal, Cheif General Manager, BSNL said that

"WiMax provides a super speed and reliable broadband service over wireless media. The minimum speed is 512 Kbps whereas the highest speed which can be taken from WiMax is 7 Mbps(37Mbps will be available soon). Each BTS tower has got around it a coverage area of 15 kms., where connections can be provided."

BSNL also offer Free trail of Wimax Broadband services for its prospective subscribers which is valid up to 15 April 2010.BSNL introduces a total of 7 tariff plans out of which 3 plans are for limited use and 4 plans are offered for unlimited use of broadband. Fixed monthly charges vary
from Rs.220 per month to Rs.750 per month for plans having limited use with regard to download/upload of data. Fixed monthly charges vary from Rs.999 to Rs.7,000 per month for plans having unlimited download or upload.(Mainly for Business).BSNL will continue to unroll WiMAX in India. It’s an important market to see how WiMAX is adopted by a tech savvy country. India has really tied itself to WiMAX but one wonders whether BSNL will consider the switch to LTE and follow a similar path to what Clearwire might do in the U.S.

Customer premises Wimax equipment can be taken from BSNL at rent of Rs. 50 per month or can be purchased after paying the charges.

M sreedhosh:I had booked for a USB Dongle for Rs.2800 + tax & etc = Rs. 2,912, BSNL has found that the Dongle feasibility for coverage is constraint to 15 mts. Since my house is off limits of that given 15 mts I had to opt for the Indoor WiMax CPE (Customer Premises Equipment). You can access this anywhere and anytime. The cost is Rs. 4,000/- . Monthly payment for both (Dongle & IW CPE) for unlimited usage is Rs. 1,000/- This is 512 kbps instruments.

As this is my 4th day of usage of this instrument on my online jobs. To check out the speed & coverage capabilities I had used it to do some download & upload of files above 2.12 GB to 19 GB files on Torrent sites & on my job networks.

The Result is as follows:-

I think there should be a 6 Green lighted (Normal) or Blue lighted bars (3G) should be there indicating the coverage strength but from the time installed I have only noticed 5 Bars just like mobile signal strength.

With 5 Bars & 2/3 Bars of signal strength (9:00am to 6:00pm):

The Speed as in transfer rate with my 512 kbps bandwidth (but shows the speed of 1682 kbps Download & 300 to 600 kbps upload, occasionally on certain servers while working on their site) can vary according to the sites & software’s we download to install for our jobs;
The speed may come to even the lowest of transfer rate 9 kbps to 30 kbps (I was pulling my hair at that time to see myself in a trial & error mode for BSNL)

With 5 Bars (Occasionally) & 2/3 Bars (Regularly) of signal strength (6:00pm to 4:45am):

As evening and night approached I saw the difference in Download & upload speed to be around 61 kbps to almost 464 kbps mostly with 2 or 3 bars of signal strength. Awesome from Our own BSNL. At least I get the work done in 4 or 6 hrs now than the 2 days or odd before with 20 to 40 kbps transfer rate/ packet rate / data transfer.

There is a consistency of 110 to 259 kbps transfer rate.

I have heard from a Business person who has taken a 1Mbps bandwidth is enjoying the speed & facilities. He & his wife are going for the high range ones as soon as they are launched the 8Mbps products but ordinaries like us may not be able to afford that too expensive instruments & monthly pay is also too high.

(Business UL 15000 Plus 2Mbps, 8Mbps Business 15000 with a cap of 125 GB: Home UL 1350 Plus 512 Kbps-affordable)

This I say only because I had it tested these days only on the difficult sites & from networked servers of Islands & inner lands where the inconsistency in coverage & signal strength is very drastic.

I thought I should appreciate the government firm with all our drawbacks & the drawbacks we create around us BSNL is trying to mend their flaws & come up with good & cheap services which could be affordable along with some benefits like unlimited usage without any hidden fair usage limits.

As for Technical Support they have been on call assistance every time I have called them & given right kind of advices & taken time to come to my place & show me why do they say; why some facilities are good or bad. The technical guys whom I have called spoke in understandable English & they can understand you too. They also can understand Hindi & return the favor in broken Hindi & English support.

Let me help you all by giving certain People to contact for BSNL WiMax truly an unlimited offer with awesome speed.
